USA Baseball Update 6/22/2004
USA Baseball Update The first intra-squad game of the 2004 USA Baseball National Team Trials ended in a 1-1 tie in four and a half innings Monday night at Doak Field on the campus of North Carolina State University. USA Red starting pitcher Ryan Mullins (So., Vanderbilt, Nashville, Tenn.) pitched well scattering two hits and striking out three in two innings. Mullins was 9-3 with a 2.58 ERA and was named an honorable mention All-American by CollegeBaseballInsider.com. Reliever Luke Hochevar (So., Tennessee, Fowler, Colo.) gave up one run in two innings and freshman closer Blair Erickson (Fr., UC Irvine, Fair Oaks, Calif.) struck out one and walked two in 0.1 innings. USA Blue starting pitcher Ian Kennedy (Fr., Southern California, Huntington Beach, Calif.) was touched for two hits and one run while striking out three in his two-innings stint. Golden Spikes Finalist Stephen Head (So., Ole Miss, Raymond, Miss.) gave up one hit and struck out two in 1.0 scoreless innings. USA BASEBALL EXTENDS FINAL EIGHT INVITATIONS TO 2004 NATIONAL TEAM TRIALS Durham, North Carolina – 27 of the 36 players invited to the 2004 USA Baseball National Team Trials – to be held June 21-26 in the Durham, North Carolina – have arrived. The USA Baseball National Team will be selected from this pool of 36 players. The official 20-man team roster will be selected following the trials, and announced on June 27. Six of the 36 players invited to the trials will be playing in the College World Series in Omaha, NE, and will join the USA Baseball Trials once their season is completed. Three more players were unable to attend the trials due to personal reasons. The Trials will open on Monday, June 21 with a practice and workout that will be open to the public beginning at 1:00 pm EST at NC State’s Doak Field. The 2004 USA Baseball National Team will open play on Wednesday evening, June 23 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:00 pm vs Canada. Team USA will also play an additional seven games in Durham, along with several more domestic exhibition games prior to representing the United States at 2004 II FISU World University Baseball Championships in Chinese Taipei, July 23-August 1. Four players from the 2003 USA Baseball National Team have been invited back as sophomores to again vie for one of 20 roster spots on Team USA: Jeff Clement – a catcher at USC from Marshalltown, Iowa; Tyler Greene – an infielder at Georgia Tech from Plantation, Florida; Stephen Head – a left-handed pitcher and infielder at Mississippi from Raymond, Mississippi; and Mark Romanczuk – a left-handed pitcher from Stanford. www.usabaseball.com for the LIVE GAMETRACKER, player stats, and other news |
