USA Baseball Schedule Changed 8/6/2006 Two late additions and one team deletion cause changes to FISU slate. HAVANA, Cuba — The USA Baseball National Team had late changes to its schedule at the FISU World University Championships which was slated to start Sunday against Chinese Taipei. Mexico and Nicaragua were added to the field, while China dropped out leaving 11 nations represented in the tournament. Besides the USA, other teams that are in the championships as scheduled are Cuba, Italy, Japan, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Czech Republic, US Virgin Islands and Chinese Taipei. The National Team was scheduled to play Chinese Taipei Sunday morning at 10 a.m. but with the new teams added, the schedule had to be revised. The 11 teams are grouped into two pools, A and B. Pool A consists of Cuba, Nicaragua, Italy, Bahamas and Japan. Pool B consists of the United States, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Mexico. The top four teams from each pool advance to the quarterfinals. The games will be played in three stadiums: Latin America Stadium, Mederos Stadium and Fernandez Stadium. The opening ceremonies took place this afternoon at Latin America Stadium, but had to be halted due to lightning and thunderstorms at the arena. The USA arrived in Cuba Thursday night, and the team has been practicing daily since then. The US will open a slate of five games in five days Monday afternoon against the Czech Republic at 1 p.m. CT at Fernandez Stadium. Vanderbilt’s David Price will take the hill in the opener.
