NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jake Carr’s two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth lifted Illinois-Chicago to a 2-1 win over Vanderbilt Thursday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

Sophomore southpaw Mike Minor cruised through the first eight innings for the Commodores (6-3) and entered the ninth with 88 pitches and a four-hit shutout. Steve McGuiggan led off with a bunt single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ty Rubio. Tony Altavilla walked and both runners then advanced on a grounder to third by Kevin Coddington. Carr then doubled over Dom de la Osa who was playing shallow in right.

Minor gave up two runs on five hits in his first career complete game. He struck out six and walked two for just his second loss in 13 decisions.

“We spoiled a good effort,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “He pitched good enough to win. The game reminded me of last year’s Friday night game when some of the same stuff happened in the ninth, the difference was we put an end to it. Unfortunately Carr took a good swing off a fastball and hit it over Dom’s head.”

Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, scoring an unearned run on Brad French’s RBI groundout.

Alex Feinberg and David Macias led VU with two hits each, but the Dores only managed four hits otherwise and left nine men on base.

“We deserved to win the game pitching and defense wise, but not offensively,” added Corbin. “I just didn’t think we put together good at-bats.”

Grant Kohlstaedt (2-1) went the distance for UIC, allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out five and walking three.

The Commodores and Flames will play the second game of the four game series tomorrow at 4 p.m. True freshman righthander Taylor Hill will make his first career start for VU, while UIC will counter with righty Derrick Miramontes (0-0, 3.09 ERA).
