Two More Commodores Taken in the MLB Draft

With two more Commodores taken in the MLB Draft today, a Vanderbilt school record of seven players were taken in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft.

After five Commodores were taken on the first day, senior catcher Jonathan Douillard was selected in the 28th round (#846) by the Chicago Cubs with junior right-hander Ryan Rote going to the New York Yankees in the 37th round (#1119) in Day Two. Douillard has played in 55 games while starting in 51.  He was named to the 2004 Johnny Bench Award Watch List and was an Southeastern Conference All-Tournament selection.  He was the second-leading Commodore hitter in the SEC Tournament with a .417 average going 5-12 with two doubles and his first career triple.  Overall, he owns a .272 average (50-184), inlcuding 10 doubles, one triple and two home runs.  He totals 14 RBI and has been perfect behing the plate with 408 putouts and 26 assists.  Opponents are 24-35 on the basepaths against Douillard. Rote has made 28 appearances this season as the Commodore’s closer.  He set the school record with 11 saves in a season and owns a 4.50 ERA.  He has pitched 30.0 innings and has given up 15 runs on 31 hits.  He has struck out 39 batters.  In the final game of the Charlottesville regional, he retired the side in the ninth inning giving Vanderbilt a 7-3 victory and trip to the Super Regional.   Douillard and Rote join five other Commodores who were drafted yesterday.  A complete list follows: Vanderbilt Commodores Taken in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft: Round 1: #6 – Jeremy Sowers (Cleveland Indians)Round 5: #146 – Cesar Nicolas (Arizona Diamondbacks)Round 5: #147 – Ryan Klosterman (Toronto Blue Jays)Round 13: #386 – Antoan Richardson (Arizona Diamondbacks)Round 14: #487 – Jeff Sues (Cleveland Indians)Round 28: #846 – Jonathan Douillard (Chicago Cubs)Round 37: #1119 – Ryan Rote (New York Yankees)
