Two Dores fall at SEC Indoors Both Vanderbilt seniors Scott Brown and Matt Lockin came up short during the first day of competition at the SEC Indoors. Brown, the fourth seed and ranked No. 17 in the nation by the ITA, faced of against Ricardo Gonzales of Georgia. The 2004 second-team All-SEC selection dropped a hard fought first set 6-7 in a tiebreak. Brown would regroup and take command in the second set, posting a 6-3 score to even the match. A tough call in the third stanza would help give Gonzales the momentum to pull away from Brown and win the match, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. “It was a tough day overall,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Ken Flach. “Scott lost a tough tiebreaker in the first and then came out and won the second. He got flustered off a tough call and never really overcame it.” Lockin, fellow senior and member on the All-SEC second-team, was matched up with Mark Growcott of LSU. The Lilburn, Ga. native went into the match with an ITA ranking of 113. Like Brown, Lockin would drop the first set and come back to win the second, setting up the decisive third set. Growcott would prevail in the third and take the victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. “Overall, I thought they both played really well,” said Flach. “We hadn’t really had a chance to work together yet because of the break. The key now is to get back, get to work and focus on the upcoming dual matches. We can take away good things from this tournament.” The Commodore pairing fell in the doubles draw as well, dropping their match against Florida, 6-8. Both Brown and Lockin will hit the courts again tomorrow in the consolation round of the SEC Indoors. |
