Trio Advances to U.S. Amateur Match Play

Sherwood, Ott, Sargent make Round of 64

OAKMONT, Pa. — A trio of Vanderbilt golfers have advanced to match play at the 121st U.S. Amateur in Pennsylvania.

Cole Sherwood, Gordon Sargent and Harrison Ott will all begin the bracketed portion of the event which takes the top 64 golfers from two rounds of stroke play which finished Wednesday morning. Live coverage Wednesday of the Round of 64 will be streamed by Peacock starting at 2 p.m. before moving to the GOLF Channel from 3-5 p.m.

Sherwood, a sophomore, shot a two-day total of 137 to finish tied for ninth place at 3-under-par. He’ll face Caden Fioroni starting at 7:10 a.m. Thursday.

A fifth-year senior at Vandy, Ott advanced to the Round of 16 in 2020 and will look to make a similar run when starts match play against Michael Thorbjornsen starting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Ott tied for 45th in stroke play at 2-over-par.

Incoming Vanderbilt freshman Gordon Sargent, after firing an opening-round 68, also finished tied for 45th. He’ll begin match play at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday against Brian Stark.
