COLUMBIA, S.C. – Starting a four-match road trip, 19th-ranked Vanderbilt dropped a 4-1 decision Thursday afternoon to No. 29 South Carolina.
Vanderbilt (12-6, 4-6 SEC) earned its lone point of the day with Anessa Lee earning a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Allie Gretkowski. The Gamecocks, winners of the doubles point to start the day, earned the other three points in singles action to claim the win.
In doubles, No. 54 Holly Staff and Anna Ross earned a 6-3 victory over No. 16 Mia Horvit and Megan Davies. It was all the Dores could collect, though, with the Gamecocks (9-9, 6-5 SEC) taking a 6-3 win at No. 2 and a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
In singles action, No. 49 Christina Rosca battled No. 39 Horvit to a split of the first two sets, but the match went unfinished with South Carolina clinching the win.
Vanderbilt will head further south on Saturday for a visit to No. 15 Florida. First serve in Gainesville is set for 10 a.m. CT.
