Dores rally but fall late

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 13 LSU avoided a series sweep Sunday with a 16-9 win over Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores trailed the Tigers 6-0 after the first two innings but fought back to tie the game in the sixth before LSU pulled retook the lead in the late innings.

Brennan Seiber kept Vanderbilt in the game after LSU jumped out to an early lead. The right-hander took over on the mound in the second inning and kept LSU off the board from the third all the way to the sixth.

Seiber allowed just two hits and struck out four over 5.0 innings.

The Commodores got on the board in the bottom of the second with a Mike Mancini home run, his fifth of the season.

Tommy Goodin led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to make it a 6-2 game. Vandy then put together a string of RBI doubles, scoring three more runs in the inning to pull within one run heading into the sixth.

Goodin then tied the game, leading off the sixth with another home run. The sophomore hit three long balls in the series against the Tigers and has six on the year.

After Vandy tied it at 6-6, LSU jumped back ahead with five runs in the top of the seventh.

Mack Whitcomb hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, cutting LSU’s lead to 11-9.

The Tigers put the game away with another five-run frame in the eighth and held on to win 16-9 to avoid a three-game sweep.

Vanderbilt (13-8, 2-1 SEC) has won 10 of its last 12 series against No. 13 LSU (13-8, 1-2 SEC). The Commodores host Indiana at Hawkins Field on Tuesday before heading to No. 3 Mississippi State next weekend.
