Tied for Fifth in Cabo

Commodores card a 2-under 282 on first day in Mexico

LOS CABOS, Mexico — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team carded a 2-under par 282 in their first round of the Cabo Collegiate and are in a tie for fifth on the team leaderboard after the first day of play in one of the toughest fields in college golf.

Junior Harrison Ott was the team leader Sunday after firing a 2-under 69 at the Cabo Del Sol Golf Club’s Ocean Course.

Vanderbilt is tied Florida State for fifth and are only four shots out of the lead, which is currently held by the trio of Arizona, Oklahoma State and Baylor after each team posted a 6-under 278 in their first round.

“I am excited and encouraged by the resiliency the guys showed today,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “There were a couple of unfortunate breaks, but that’s golf and I love how we responded. We did a lot of good things and had some guys really competing and playing closer to the way we know we can play. Matthew (Riedel) played really well today and continues taking good steps. John (Augenstein) found some momentum on our last nine holes which was big for him and our team.

“Harry is doing a lot of things at a high level and he did an awesome job lifting the team up today with his play. William (Moll) and Reid (Davenport) both did a lot of good things and will be ready to go (Monday). We need to clean up a few small things going forward, but today was a good first day and also left some room for improvement.”

The Commodores counted Ott’s 69, a 1-under 70 from Riedel (a freshman), an even-par 71 from Augenstein, a senior, and a 1-over 72 from Moll, a freshman.

Arizona’s Trevor Werbylo has the individual lead after the first day of play after shooting a 5-under 66. He holds a one-shot lead on Blake Wagoner of Arizona State.

“(Monday) is a big day with a great opportunity,” Limbaugh said. “We need to trust ourselves, trust our process and be accountable to our actions and habits.”

The second of three rounds takes place Monday with live results available throughout the week on Golfstat.com.
