Three Straight Wins

No. 16 Vanderbilt women's tennis pushes streak to three with 5-2 victory over Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. — Senior Célia-Belle Mohr notched wins in doubles and singles play as No. 16 Vanderbilt put together a team effort en route to a 5-2 road victory over Ole Miss on Sunday.

“It was a really quality win on the road; Ole Miss is a very good team,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “I think we were tough in the critical moments of singles play to pull away on Courts 1, 3, and 5 in those first sets, which all started out quite close.”

Sophomore Valeria Ray and junior Bridget Stammel got the ball rolling for the Dores at No. 2 doubles, downing Andrea Nova and Brooklyn Olson 6-3. No-14 ranked Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster began their match down 3-0 at the No. 1 position. The pair regrouped, eventually clinching the doubles point with a 6-4 comeback effort. Vanderbilt is now 15-4 in dual match doubles play this season.

The Dores went on to capture four first set leads out of the six active singles courts. Webster picked up the first singles win of the day, taking down Rachel Krzyak 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. The victory is Webster’s third in a row. Mohr added to the Vanderbilt lead at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 result over Emily Welker. She ends her three-match skid, pushing her overall singles record to 16-6 this season. Stammel secured the match-clinching point for the Dores at No. 3 singles. The junior notched a 6-3, 6-4 win to deliver the team’s third consecutive victory. Senior Amy Stevens generated a second set shutout to claim the final point of the day for the black and gold, moving past Emma Kette 7-6 (5), 6-0.

“Sophia, Bridget and Célia did fantastic jobs of not allowing their opponents much of a seam to get back into the matches,” Tsoubanos said. “It was a great effort to close those out in straight sets. And I think Amy getting her first set tiebreaker was great for our momentum. I’m proud of the fight from Valeria and Trinetra battling back to get their second sets and force some 10-point breakers.”

Since 2002, Vandy is 23-5 against Ole Miss and has now won the last four meetings. The Dores move to 7-1 against teams ranked outside of the ITA top 25.

No. 16 Vanderbilt (15-4, 8-3 SEC) continues its road trip with a test against No. 1 Georgia (18-1, 11-0 SEC) on Friday. For more information, updates and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, @VandyWTennis, on Instagram and X.
