WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Catherine Newman, Keilly Ulery and Jackie Wu advanced to Saturday’s round of 32 after picking up wins in the main singles draw Friday at the Southeast ITA Regional Championships.
Newman, who is coming off a first place finish at last weekend’s June Stewart Invitational, defeated Louisville’s Jo-Anne Van Aerde in straight sets Friday 7-5, 6-2. With the win, Newman improves to 9-4 overall, including four straight. The junior now has 67 career wins in just over two years at Vanderbilt.
Ulery followed Newman’s performance up with her own by dispatching Carolina Escamilla of Kentucky in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2. The win over Escamilla gives Ulery her sixth win of the fall campaign.
Earlier in the day, Wu cruised through Duke’s Melissa Mang, 6-0, 6-1 for her ninth win of the year, The freshman from Holmdel, N.J., is now 9-1 through her first 10 collegiate matches. Fellow freshman Chelsea Preeg lost for only the second time this season as Tennessee’s Caitlin Whoriskey upended Preeg 6-1, 6-4. Whoriskey came into today’s match rated No. 37 in the ITA national preseason poll. Preeg, a native of Naples, Fla., is now 8-2 in her first 10 matches as a Commodore.
In doubles action, the Commodore tandem of Wu and Preeg fell to UNC-Greensboro’s pair of Alejandra Guerra and Arielle Van Strolley 8-3 in Friday’s round of 32. The Vanderbilt duo advanced to the second round with a first-round bye.
The team of Newman and Ulery also fell in Friday’s round of 32 as they dropped an 8-7(5) tiebreaker to ETSU’s Yevgeniya Stupak and Paula Jamie.
