NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sydney Campbell, a highly touted women’s tennis prospect, signed a National Letter of Intent, as was announced by Vanderbilt women’s tennis head coach Geoff Macdonald Saturday.
Campbell, a Franklin, Tenn., native will make the short venture to Nashville next fall to join the Commodores’ tennis program. The 2012 USTA Tennessee Player of the Year will bring a long list of accolades to the Vanderbilt tennis program.
“Sydney may be a local player, but she is at an international level and one of the better players ever to sign here,” Coach Macdonald said. “We are thrilled to have her. I see her as a real impact player, both in terms of bringing out more local fan support, but also in her contributions back to the community. She is a world-class talent.”
Campbell has consistently ranked in the top 20 of the USTA Junior rankings, while also boasting one of the top RPI rankings, as high as No. 1 in the country, by Tennis Recruiting. She has spent most of the 2012 season playing on the Pro Circuit Tour, which will only make her resume that much more impressive once she arrives at Vanderbilt.
In 2010 and 2011, Campbell led Christ Presbyterian Academy to consecutive state championships, while also winning individual state championships both years. She finished her high school career undefeated in singles and doubles. Also, in each of those years, she was named the Tennessean Player of the Year.
The list of tournament wins during Campbell’s high school career runs long, as she won the 2011 USTA Bullfrog Southern Selection (Baton Rouge, La.) in singles and doubles, the 2011 USTA National Open (Phoenix, Ariz.) and the 2012 Tennessee Valley Open Championship (Chattanooga, Tenn.).
Campbell was also a singles finalist at the 2011 USTA Regional Tournament, as well as the 2011 Atlanta ITF.
Campbell will begin competing for the Commodores in the fall of 2013.
