Dec. 12, 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt head swimming coach Jeremy Organ announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Friday. Margaux Georgiadis, Michele Williamson and Rebecca Young have all signed an NLI to swim for VU next season. The three prep standout swimmers will join the Commodores at the start of the 2010-2011 season.

“We are very excited about this years early signing class,” Organ said. “These fine young ladies are going to make our team stronger and help continue our growth as a competitive swim team.”

Young is an accomplished breaststroker with her primary events being the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. A native of Montgomery, Ala., Young attends Trinity Presbyterian high school where she was a high school and club swimming state champion. Outside of her high school team, Young swims for the Montgomery Barracudas club team that is coached by Paul Mielke. In the classroom, Young is a two-time scholastic all-american and a national merit semifinalist.

“Rebecca is a young lady that we feel has the potential to be an impact swimmer on our team,” Organ said. “She fits in real well with the rest of the team and we are happy she chose Vanderbilt to further her academic and athletic goals.”

Williamson, a native of Cypress, Texas, is a two-time Texas first-team all-state selection. She holds the Cypress Creek high school record in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Williamson has also been very successful out of the pool in her prep years, earning USA Swimming Academic All-American honors three straight years (2007-09). The Cypress Creek prep standout swims for the Cy Fair Swim Club that is coached by Clayton Cagle.

“Michelle is a distance swimmer that we are very excited to have joining our program,” Organ said. “She is a very competitive person and we look forward to her tenacity she is going to bring to the day-to-day training. Michelle is going to have an immediate impact in the distance events.”

Georgiadis is three-year varsity letterwinner at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa. The last two seasons, Georgiadis has been voted the swim team “MVP” after leading her team at the Class AA Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League championships and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championships. A national qualifier in the sprint freestyles, Georgiadis also swims for the JCC Sailfish club team that is coached by Al Rose.

“Margaux is a freestyle specialist that has the ability to compete in the 50 up to the 500,” Organ said. “I can’t wait for Margaux to come to Vanderbilt and I think she is going to have a very successful college career once it’s all said and done.”
