Former Commodore Dansby Swanson made his major league debut Wednesday night in Atlanta in the Braves’ loss to Minnesota.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 major league baseball draft and 2015 national player of the year, Swanson was called up prior to Wednesday’s game and was in the lineup for the Braves hitting eighth and playing shortstop in his MLB debut. He wasted little time picking up his first big league hit, singling to right in the fourth inning for his first major league career hit. He followed up with a solid single up the middle in the ninth inning for a two-hit debut, finishing his first MLB game 2-for-4.
The Marietta, Ga. native helped lead the Commodores to their first national title in 2014, winning Most Outstanding Player honors in the College World Series. He followed up an All-American sophomore season with an outstanding junior campaign that saw him earn first team All-American honors and National Player of the Year accolades. He was selected first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2015 MLB Draft before being traded to Atlanta later that year. Swanson joined David Price as the two Commodores to be selected first overall in the MLB draft and make Vanderbilt one of two schools (Arizona State) to have multiple No. 1 picks.
