Commodores shutout Saint Mary’s

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt finished off a series sweep over Saint Mary’s on Sunday with a seven-inning, 10-0 victory at Hawkins Field to improve to 7-1 on the season.

Cody Bowker was dominant on the mound in his second start as a Commodore. Bowker tossed five shutout innings with six strikeouts and did not allow a hit. Over his first two starts, the Maine native has allowed two hits over 9.0 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts.

Ryan Ginther and Alex Kranzler finished off the shutout with an inning each, limiting the Gaels to just two base knocks.

At the plate, Riley Nelson, Brodie Johnston and Mac Rose collected two hits each. Both Johnston and Mike Mancini tallied two RBI and Jacob Humphrey had another big game, driving in three runs on Sunday.

Vandy got the offense going in the bottom of the third. Rustan Rigdon hit a leadoff single and stole second. Nelson was hit by a pitch and Johnston notched his first collegiate hit with an RBI single through the left side to score Rigdon.

Colin Barczi picked up an RBI on a groundout and Mancini scored Johnston on an infield single to put Vandy on top 3-0.

After scoring nine runs in an inning in Saturday’s win, Vandy sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning on Sunday, scoring seven runs. All seven runs came with two outs.

After two quick groundouts to start the frame, RJ Austin worked a walk and Rigdon followed with another walk. Nelson singled through the right side to score Austin.

Johnston tallied his second RBI of the game with a single that allowed Rigdon to score from third. Rose then sent a double off the wall in left, plating Nelson.

JD Rogers entered as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to load the bases for Mancini who also drew a walk, picking up an RBI.

Humphrey capped off the frame with a bases-clearing double to the gap in left-center, giving the Commodores a 10-run lead heading into the seventh.

Kranzler worked around one hit in the seventh to keep Saint Mary’s off the board and grab the run-rule win for Vanderbilt.

Two-out hitting was the story all series with Vanderbilt batters posting a .442 clip and 23 RBI with two outs over the three games.

Vanderbilt stays home and will host Tennessee Tech on Tuesday at Hawkins Field at 4:30 p.m.
