CORAL GABLES. Fla. – Following yesterday’s inclement weather conditions, the Vanderbilt women’s team were finally able to kickoff the spring by competing in the Miami Invitation.
The top-ranked Commodores went 10-5 in singles competition with three of Vandy’s own going undefeated individually. Vanderbilt freshmen Fernanda Contreras and Summer Dvorak both went undefeated on the day, alongside senior Courtney Colton. After a 12-month break from tennis Georgina Sellyn brought in her first VU victory since 1/16/15, with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ole Miss’ Stevens.
However, the `Dores are still looking for their first ranked singles win of the invitational, as Astra Sharma, Sydney Campbell and Ellie Yates all fell to strong Miami players. Sharma and Campbell fought extremely hard, forcing three sets against competitors both ranked in the Oracle/ITA Top-10.
In doubles action, VU only brought home one win as Frances Altick and Contreras defeated Miami’s Fuentes/Riobueno 7-6 (7-2). The tandems victory gave the commodores a combined record of 11-7 on the day.
Sunday’s action is scheduled to start at 7:00 am CT.
