NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team enjoyed another successful day at the June Stewart Invitational, winning all six doubles matches the team played and winning four of six singles matches.
“I thought it was a great day of doubles,” Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “I saw significant improvement from yesterday. I thought overall it was a day of good development for our team.”
The doubles team of Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery scored a pair of impressive wins, defeating Megan Broderick and Lauren Meier from Kentucky 8-3 in the first match of the day. In their second match of the day, the Commodore duo dispatched Jessica Leitch and Wendy Pilecka of Arizona State 8-4.
Liberty Sveke and Keilly Ulery also posted a pair of wins in doubles on Saturday. Sveke and Ulery defeated Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnson of Kentucky 9-7, and Alba Berdala and Charlotte Martin of Indiana 8-4.
Caroline Ferrell and Katie Kilborn continued their perfect doubles weekend as they defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Andrea Herrera and Shannon Hartmann 8-2. In their second match of the day, Ferrell and Kilborn beat Sigrid Fischer and Lindsey Stuckey of Indiana 8-6.
In singles, freshman Keilly Ulery advanced to the finals of her draw with a three-set win over Arizona State’s Micaela Hein 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
A pair of Commodores advanced to the finals of the Craig Clark Draw as Taylor defeated Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-2, while Courtney Ulery got past Megan Broderick of Kentucky 6-2, 6-3.
Katie Kilborn picked up her first singles win of the weekend with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Ernestine Koornhof of UT Martin.
Sveke lost a tough three-set match to Kentucky’s Christine Johnson 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Ferrell was also defeated in singles, falling to Pilecka of Arizona State 6-4, 6-1.
Play in the June Stewart Invitational concludes tomorrow with a round of doubles and a round of singles.
