ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The freshmen tandem of Heather Steinbauer and Jackie Wu picked up their biggest doubles wins of their young careers by knocking off Michigan 51st pair of Tania Mahtani and Chisako 8-5 at day two of the Michigan Invitational. The Commodores won three-of-five singles matches against its in-state rivals, the Lady Vols of Tennessee.
Freshman Jackie Wu picked up her fifth win over a top-100 player Sunday by defeating Tennessee’s 92nd-ranked Caitlin Whoriskey in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. With the win, Wu improves to 14-4 on the season. Fellow freshman Chelsea Preeg picked up a singles win of her own Sunday by dispatching Jennifer Meredith of Tennessee in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Sophomore Keilly Ulery notched her second singles win in as many days with a three-set win over UT’s Natalie Pluskota. After dropping the first set 3-6, Ulery dominated the second set winning 6-1, before finishing off Pluskota in the third set 7-5.
Vanderbilt’s Hannah Blatt nearly picked up her second singles win of the tournament before being outlasted by UT’s Samantha Orlin in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-2, Blatt stormed back to take the second set over the 77th-ranked Orlin, before falling in the third set 6 games to three.
Heather Steinbauer also competed in singles on Sunday as she came out on the short end, falling to Zsófia Zubor of Tennessee, 7-5, 6-4.
