FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Jackie Wu came out strong against the No. 2 seeded Nicole Gibbs on Thursday’s first round of singles play at the USTA/ITA National Indoors Collegiate Championships, but fell to the nationally-ranked star in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
“I think she came out really strong,” said Gibbs, discussing her match against Wu. “She plays a very different game than I am used to on the women’s college tennis tour. She has a really big serve and likes serve-and-volley plays, comes to the net, and a very aggressive player. I think I did a good job of staying in there, because she got up to a quick 3-0 start and I did not let it fluster me.”
Gibbs finished the 2010-11 season as the No. 12 singles player in the country.
