Commodores fall 13-11 in Game 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt lost 13-11 to No. 16 Oklahoma in the second game of the series Friday at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores and Sooners combined for 13 runs in the first inning and Oklahoma hit two grand slams to even the series heading into Saturday’s finale.

Oklahoma plated five runs in the top of the first but Vanderbilt answered with eight in the home half on just two hits.

The Commodores worked five walks and used two hit-by-pitches to score the first four runs. Rustan Rigdon lined a two-run single to put the Commodores ahead and Brodie Johnston added a two-out, two-run single to make it an 8-5 game after one.

Ryker Waite ripped a single in the bottom of the second to score Braden Holcomb and put Vanderbilt in front by four.

The Sooners hit the first of their two grand slams in the top of the fourth to even the score at 9-9.

The second came in the top of the sixth as the visitors grabbed a 13-9 advantage.

Holcomb smashed his 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Dores back within two.

Vanderbilt brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but the Sooners turned a game-ending double play to win 13-11 and even the series.

Vanderbilt falls to 21—15 (7-7 SEC) while No. 16 Oklahoma improves to 23-11 (6-8 SEC).
