FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jenna Goblrisch’s goal at the 101:05 point in the second overtime period pushed Kentucky to a 1-0 win over Vanderbilt Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex.
The loss eliminated the Commodores from postseason play and they ended the year with a 9-8-2 overall record and 3-7-1 Southeastern Conference ledger. The win was the third straight in the series for the Wildcats whose season ended with a 5-12-2 overall and 3-7-1 league record.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw through regulation and the first overtime period before Goblrisch connected on a shot from 15 yards out just a minute into the second overtime. She took a feed from Nicola Holdsworth and fired a shot that deflected off a Vanderbilt defender and inside the left post.
Goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel stopped five Kentucky shots and was in line for her sixth shutout of the year before UK scored.
Senior Amy Wilcox led VU with two shots, while sophomore Megan Kinsella had a shot on goal. UK held an 18-8 shot advantage for the game, including a 3-0 shot lead in the overtime periods.
The Commodores improved upon a six win season a year ago and battled through injuries throughout the year. Senior midfielder Katie Schulz, a three-time All-SEC selection, missed seven games due to injury including the last five due to a knee injury. Sophomore defender Mary Rachel Reynolds, a freshman All-SEC pick last year, played in just one game, while stellar recruit Chelsea Stewart missed the season while playing for the Canadian Under 20 National Team.
Vanderbilt loses three seniors off this year’s team in Schulz, Wilcox and Taylor Ryer. The team will return eight starters including the top three scorers in sophomores Molly and Megan Kinsella and freshman Candace West. Bachtel, a sophomore, finished with a 1.23 goals against average this season and now has nine shutouts in her career.
