Soccer Advances on Penalty Kicks

Vandy dances into the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Eighth-seeded Vanderbilt soccer took down the top seed in the lower left in Florida State 4-3 in penalty kicks, to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

The Commodores and Seminoles were even at 3-3 through both overtime periods to set up the PK drama.

Vandy keeper Sara Wojdelko made a career-high 14 saves, the most since Christy Barringer made 15 in the 1992 season.

Florida State (15-2-4) broke open the scoring in the first 58 seconds of the match, from a goal from Marianyela Jimenez. Graduate Rachel Deresky scored the equalizer nine minutes later, off a rocket from outside the 18-yard box.

Caroline Betts scored the go-ahead in the 13th minute to put the Dores up 2-1. Florida State’s Jordynn Dudley scored another equalizer to knot the game 2-2 at the break.

Betts scored again for the Commodores, the first brace of her career to put Vandy up 3-2. The Seminoles would find the back of the net again to tie the match 3-3 as regulation expired. Both teams remained scoreless through both overtimes to force penalty kicks.

Courtney Jones stepped up first for Vandy and connected to give Vandy the 1-0 advantage. Florida State was up and evened the score 1-1. Junior Hannah McLaughlin lined up next but Seminole keeper Addie Todd jumped in front of it.

Florida State took a 2-1 advantage, but Vivian Akyirem came up for the Dores to even the score 2-2. The Seminoles went on to connect on their third try but missed the next two attempts as the Commodores jumped ahead to take a 4-3 advantage and advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time.

Vanderbilt will face fourth-seeded Penn State on Sunday at the Seminole Soccer Complex at 4:30 p.m. CT. The match can be seen on ESPN+.
