History repeats itself once again at the Furman Fall Classic as the Commodores have success in singles. Vanderbilt has six players in contention for their flight championships on Sunday morning, but fell short in a doubles championship.
The doubles duo of Ashleigh Antal and Astra Sharma fought to the death in their doubles flight championship, but ultimately fell this morning to South Carolina’s Folland and Blevins, 8-7(6). Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell defeated the Gamecocks’ Lechemia and Berg, 8-2 to claim third place in their flight.
“I thought overall we competed much better as a group today, singles and doubles, said Vanderbilt associate head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “Ashleigh (Antal) and Astra (Sharma) played very good doubles and I thought they played well enough to pull out a victory but came up short in a highly contested match, fighting to get back in it when they found themselves down 5-2.”
The only ranked singles players still in competing for flight championships hail from Vanderbilt. Six Commodores return to singles play vying for flight championships tomorrow, one upping last years five who advanced.
“In singles we really had a strong showing”, said Tsoubanos. “We expect to see more competitive matches tomorrow. Match volume is huge in the fall, so we are happy to be getting these quality matches in early.”
Tomorrow makes for an interesting day with Vanderbilt’s No. 82 Marie Casares facing off against Vandy teammate No. 63 Courtney Colton. Astra Sharma has an exciting match scheduled, competing against archrival Tennessee’s Laurence Guevremont.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday, with singles play beginning at 9 a.m.
