ATHENS, Ga. – The Vanderbilt baseball team blanked No. 22 Georgia, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Foley Field. With the win, the Commodores claim the weekend series and improve to 31-15 on the season, including a 12-12 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
Vanderbilt received an impressive performance from its starter Carter Holton, as the team picked up its ninth shutout on the season. Holton (6-3) tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five to earn his sixth win on the campaign. The freshman southpaw notched his fifth quality start on the year.
The Commodores used two arms out of the bullpen to preserve the shutout with the duo of Nick Maldonado and Thomas Schultz. Maldonado worked 2.0 scoreless frames, while Schultz covered the ninth to close out the win.
Vanderbilt gained an early advantage in the series finale, plating two runs in the top of the first. Enrique Bradfield Jr. led off the ballgame with a single up the middle. Two outs later, Dominic Keegan connected on his third homer of the weekend with a two-run shot to put Vanderbilt on the board and give the Dores a 2-0 lead.
Vandy added two more in the sixth to extend its lead. The inning began with a single from Spencer Jones before Keegan reached on a walk to place two runners on. One out later, Javier Vaz ripped a ball down the right field line for a two-run double to double the Commodores’ advantage to 4-0.
Vaz highlighted the offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with a team-high tying two RBI. Keegan also added two RBI, while scoring two of Vanderbilt’s four runs on the afternoon.
Vanderbilt will return to action on Tuesday evening, welcoming Indiana State to Hawkins Field for a midweek matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., with action airing live on SEC Network+.
