Sharma named SEC Player of the Week

Astra Sharma of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

The Aussie rides a seven-match winning streak in singles and is undefeated in SEC play. Sharma owns just one loss on the season, playing every match in the No. 1 singles position. In doubles, No. 21 Sharma and Contreras own just one loss in SEC play. In singles, Sharma clinched VU’s sweep over in-state rival Tennessee in straight sets with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win against Sadie Hammond. The redshirt senior clinched the doubles point alongside Fernanda Contreras in VU’s match against Tennessee’s Riley/Staines, 6-4.

This past weekend No. 14 Sharma earned her first top-10 victory on the year in a straight-set victory over UGA’s sixth-ranked Jokic 6-4, 6-3 for the 3-1 Vanderbilt lead. Jokic was Sharma’s 10th-ranked singles opponent on the season. With the win on Sunday, Sharma now owns a 105-30 overall career singles record.

Sharma and the remainder of the second-ranked Commodore contingent will face Kentucky at home on Saturday at noon.
