NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sydney Campbell and Astra Sharma of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team begin competition in the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday.
Taking place in Flushing, N.Y. at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the three-day tournament features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Campbell and Sharma will be representing the Commodores in singles action.
Ranked No. 19 in the nation, Sharma enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed and was an automatic qualifier following her semifinal run in the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships last month. The redshirt-junior faces a tough SEC opponent in Florida’s ninth-ranked Belinda Woolcock. The all conference matchup is slated to begin Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. CT.
As the No. 12 singles player in the country, Nashville’s own Campbell earned an at-large bid and is back in the Big Apple for the third year in a row.
Last season as a junior, Campbell made it to the quarterfinals after knocking off student-athletes from Georgia and Cal before falling to Miami’s Stephanie Wagner. During her sophomore campaign, Campbell lost in the opening round of play only to defeat No. 3 Hayley Carter the next day in a back draw competition.
Campbell takes on Pepperdine’s Mayar Sherif Ahmed on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Ranked No. 48 in the country, Ahmed has taken on one Commodore already this season, falling to Sharma in straight sets in quarterfinal play at All-Americans.
