Six Vanderbilt Commodores were selected during the major league baseball draft held earlier this month.
Since being drafted left-hander Sam Selman and infielder Anthony Gomez are the only two Commodores to have signed professional contracts. Selman inked a deal with the Kansas City Royals as the team’s second round pick (66th overall). Gomez signed with the Miami Marlins as a sixth round pick (197th overall).
Gomez made his professional debut last night for the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League. Gomez went 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI while hitting second in an 8-5 loss to Mahoning Valley as the team’s designated hitter. In his second at-bat, Gomez ripped a run-scoring double through the right side to score the Jammers’ first run of the game.
Selman has been assigned to Kansas City’s short season affiliate, the Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League.
The other four drafted Dores have yet to sign a pro contract if they choose, all four have eligibility remaining. Right-hander Drew VerHagen was a fourth round pick of Detroit joining teammate Will Clinard, who was picked by the Tigers in the 19th round. Connor Harrell was the third Commodore this summer picked by Detroit when the Tigers tabbed him in the 31st round. The Seattle Mariners selected Mike Yastrzemski in the 30th round.
