NEW YORK – Vanderbilt women’s tennis sophomore Georgina Sellyn was not able to move on in the singles main draw, as she was defeated in three sets by Valentine Confalonieri of Lynn University, one of the top Division II players in the country. Sellyn will now play in the singles consolation of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, beginning on Friday. Her opponent and time are to be determined and will be announced after the ITA re-draws for the consolation draw.
“Georgina played a very talented player today,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “She did not give this one away, she played very hard all afternoon. I have to credit Confalonieri, she really stepped up her level of play after that opening set. She has one of the better forehands I’ve seen, it is a big heavy shot and it was giving us problems today.”
Sellyn controlled the first set, taking advantage of Confalonieri’s mistakes. The Glasgow, Scotland native took the first set 6-3.
The No. 1 player in the southern region of DII turned her game around in the second and third sets and didn’t look back. She jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set, and then a 4-0 lead in the third set, but Sellyn’s efforts weren’t enough, as Confalonieri won both 6-3 and 6-4.
“We didn’t really know much about her [Confalonieri] coming into the match,” said Macdonald. “It’s hard to tell what you’re going to get with Division II and wild card players. She did a good job in the second and third sets. She moved Georgina around to open up the court and then made the big shots when it counted.”
Sellyn will play in the consolation draw, with times and opponents to be released by the ITA later tonight.
