NEW YORK – Vanderbilt tennis sophomore Georgina Sellyn was eliminated from the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, Saturday. Sellyn, the 71st-ranked singles player, dropped her quarterfinal match, in three sets, to the third-ranked Lauren Herring of Georgia.
“Herring is a really great player, and she really raised her level of play as the match went on,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “This is the toughest tournament in college tennis and for Georgina to come in here and compete the way she did is great.”
Sellyn jumped out to an early lead in the first set, and didn’t look back, as she cruised to a 6-2 win.
In the second set, third-ranked Herring took over. The Bulldog junior won 12 of the next 14 games, as she took the second set 6-2, before winning the final set 6-0.
“Herring served really well in the last two sets. Georgina didn’t lose this match, she just got beat by a better player,” said Macdonald. “When she adds things to her game, I have no doubt she can compete at that elite level.”
Sellyn, the winner of the Ohio Valley Regional, finishes the fall season with a 13-4 record including going 2-1 against ranked opponents.
“Georgina had a great fall,” Macdonald said. “Every tournament we played in was tough, and it was an great honor for her to win the regional tournament and get the opportunity to represent Vanderbilt at the National Indoor Championships.”
