Commodores add four wins in final day of June Stewart Invitational, look forward to sectionals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team added four wins in seven matches as the 12th annual June Stewart Invitational wrapped up on Sunday.

“We had some great, closely contested matches all weekend with both new faces and also some familiar opponents,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “Overall I am proud of our team’s effort and look forward to getting back to work.”

Freshman Jayden Jagolinzer came into Sunday unbeaten at the invitational. The Commodore continued her streak in a day three SEC matchup, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Kentucky’s Tess Bucher. Freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar also triumphed over Kentucky, downing Ellie Myers 7-5, 6-2 for her second singles win in as many days. Senior Amy Stevens notched her first victory of the weekend 7-5, 6-1 against Kentucky’s Elizabeth Eades. Junior Sonya Macavei and freshman Sophia Webster came just short of completing another singles sweep for the Dores. Both lost in set three tiebreakers to Ole Miss opponents, with Macavei falling to Andrea Nova 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 and Webster losing to Brooklyn Olson 7-5, 2-6, 11-9.

Vanderbilt split its doubles matches to conclude the weekend. Stevens and Jagolinzer dropped to Purdue’s Tara Katarina Milic and Kathryn Wilson 6-3, marking Jagolinzer’s first loss of the event. Macavei and Vijayakumar grabbed a bounce back victory for the Dores, taking a tiebreaker against Serafima Bobrovnikova and Sofiia Paladi of Lipscomb 7-6 (6).

“We’ll have to use the remainder of the fall to work on consistency and discipline as it relates to strategy and executing in match play,” Tsoubanos said. “The challenge for those that are done competing this fall is doing so outside of actual competition. One place the lack of consistency seemed evident was in the stat column of deciding tiebreakers in singles, where we were one of seven. We will get back to work this week addressing those things and preparing for sectionals at Georgia.”

Vanderbilt returns to action at the ITA Sectional Championships Nov. 7-10, hosted by Georgia. For more information and updates on the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, follow @VandyWTennis on Instagram and X.
