Vanderbilt duo looks for second national title of the year

Ann Arbor, Mich. — Vanderbilt seniors Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos are the top-seeded women’s doubles team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan. The duo won the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., one month ago to earn their No. 1 seed.

Schmandt and Tsoubanos combined to win 56 doubles matches a year ago, both earning All-SEC honors with different doubles partners. This season marks the first year that Schmandt and Tsoubanos have been paired together and the results have been nothing short of impressive.

The 16-team doubles draw features four of the seven teams that Schmandt and Tsoubanos defeated in the All-American Championships. The Commodores first round match-up will be against Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub of Tulane University on Thursday.
