Sargent, Sherwood on Haskins Preseason Watch List

Vandy duo among early favorites for top national award

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two of Vanderbilt’s own are among the early favorites to be named the top college golfer for the 2022-23 season.

Gordon Sargent and Cole Sherwood have been named to the Preseason Haskins Award Watch List, the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, golf sports information directors and select golf media.

Sargent, the defending individual national champion who spent his summer competing at the Palmer Cup and World Amateur Golf Championship, is ranked fourth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He was the 2022 Phil Mickelson Award winner, an All-American, the SEC Freshman of the Year and a Haskins Award finalist.

The Michael Carter “Junior” Memorial Award at the Palmer Cup, Sherwood was an All-American and Haskins Award finalist for the 2021-22 season. He was an All-American Scholar and won two individual titles last season and is ranked 20th in the WAGR.

Celebrating its 53rd year, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel has been given to players who have captured 33 major championships and more than 400 professional tournaments around the world. Past recipients include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, and Justin Thomas. Chris Gotterup (Oklahoma) won the 52nd Haskins Award in 2022.
