Ryan Klosterman Earns Jeff Peeples Most Valuable Player Award

Vanderbilt junior shortstop Ryan Klosterman was honored with the Jeff Peeples Most Valuabale Player Award prior to the Vanderbilt/Kentucky baseball game Sunday at Hawkins Field.  The award is voted on by Vanderbilt players, coaching staff and support staff and recognizes a Commodore player for his outstanding performance on the field throughout the season.

Klosterman has played in all but one game this season (53 games) and reached base in all but three games.  The Commodore’s lead-off hitter has scored at least one run in 41 games.  His fielding percentage of .973 leads the SEC at his position and places him among the best in the nation.  He leads the SEC in triples (7) and owns a .350 batting average.  He has scored a team-leading 61 runs this season which ranks third in the SEC.  He is second on the team in stolen bases with 13.  He was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic District Team and finished the past semester with a 3.8 GPA.

“MVP to me means a guy who works well in the locker room; a guy who can play defense; a guy who can challenge his teammates every day; and a guy who can get a big hit here and there,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said.  “His work habits seep throughout the team and he never takes a day off.  He character is impecable.”

The award pays tribute to Jeff Peeples who was a four-year letterwinner for the Commdores.  A three-time All-Southeastern Conference selection, he helped guide the Commodores to three SEC Tournaments and the 1973 SEC Championship.  Peeples was one of only two pitchers in SEC history to lead the league in earned run average for two consecutive seasons.  He also led the league in victories and strikeouts in 1973.  Presenting the award was Peeple’s sister Susie Scott and his daughter, Sara.
