Vandy has tough day during Round 2 of SEC Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Vanderbilt women’s golf weathered the storm Thursday at the SEC Championships to finish the second round of stroke play tied for fourth place. After a light first round, the Legacy Course at Greystone Golf Club showed its difficulty in the rain, leading to the Commodores carding a 308 total. In first place and 10 strokes ahead of Vandy is reigning SEC champion LSU.

“Today might have been the toughest conditions we’ve ever played in. It was an absolute downpour warming up and then through the first 6-7 holes.” said head coach Greg Allen. “Once the rain moved on, the winds blew a steady 10-15 mph with gusts up to 30.

“I thought our girls handled it really well early in the round but couldn’t hang onto any momentum,” he added.

It was freshman Lynn Lim who led the Dores Thursday. Her second round 4-over par 76 has her tied for 24th heading into the final round of stroke play.

Celina Sattelkau notched a 5-over par 77 and is tied for seventh individually after 36 holes with a 145 total. Tess Davenport also finished the second round at 5-over par, and Virginie Ding carded a 6-over par round. Tillie Claggett—who is now tied for 15th overall—was 7-over par in the round.

Friday’s third round of stroke play will determine the top eight teams who advance to weekend match play. Vanderbilt has made it to match play every year since its inception in 2018. Its best seed ever was fourth in 2019. The Commodores currently sit three strokes ahead of eighth-place Florida.

“Thankfully, we still have a great opportunity tomorrow to put together a round that will get us into match play,” said Allen. “I believe in this team and trust they will play hard.”

Vanderbilt will tee off with Texas A&M and Mississippi State at 8:50 a.m. CT with its hopes of securing a spot in match play on the line. Live scoring can be found HERE.
