NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team returns to play for its second tournament of the fall season, as eight Commodores are set to compete in the main draw at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Tennessee.
Senior Bridget Stammel enters Friday as the back-to-back Ohio Valley Regional singles champion and eyes a three-peat in Knoxville, where she won the singles draw in 2023. Stammel earned her second regional title last season at Middle Tennessee, becoming the first in program history to accomplish that feat. She was just the second player in the event’s history to win back-to-back singles titles after Tennessee’s Elza Tomase did so in 2021 and 2022. Five total Dores are seeded in singles play, with Stammel serving as the No. 3 seed. Junior Valeria Ray rounds out the ranked Dores competing in singles at No. 45 and will be the event’s No. 5 seed.
Graduate Célia-Belle Mohr and sophomore Sophia Webster come in as the No. 12 ranked duo and No. 1 doubles seed; they open with a bye and will begin play in the round of 32. The pair made yet another run to the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships in September before bowing out to No. 1 ranked Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton of North Carolina. No. 37 Stammel and Ray make up the other ranked pairing for Vandy and will also start in the round of 32 after receiving a bye of their own. They currently lead the team in doubles wins with three, two of which have come over ranked opponents.
The ITA Regional Championships marks the second qualifying tournament for the 2025 NCAA Individual Championships. In total, 13 regional tournaments will be hosted across the men’s and women’s sides of play. The two singles finalists from each region will secure qualification for the NCAA Singles Championship and the doubles champion from each region will earn qualification for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
