Reynolds Wins in Four To Take First Australian Open Victory 1/18/2005
Reynolds Wins in Four To Take First Australian Open Victory Former Commodore Bobby Reynolds came from behind Monday night to defeat Nicolas Almagro of Spain and secure a date in the second round of the 2005 Australian Open. Reynolds would drop a tough first set to Almagro, 5-7, but would bounce back to even the match with a 6-4 triumph in the second frame. The ex-Commodore would go on to win the next two sets in tiebreaks, 7-6 (9-7) and 7-6 (7-5). Overall, Reynolds slammed 21 aces and placed 42 total winners en route to the win. “I am so proud of him,” said Vanderbilt men’s tennis coach Ken Flach. “I always knew he had what it took to be a professional. His win will give him the confidence he needs to realize he can play on the tour.” The 17th-seeded Romanian Andrei Pavel stands as the next obstacle in Reynolds’ path to the third round. Pavel is a Melbourne veteran, playing in his sixth open. His best showing was the fourth round in both 1999 and 2004. |
