Vandy drops elimination game 2-1 to Xavier

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt fell 2-1 to Xavier in Sunday’s elimination game as the Commodores’ season comes to an end in the regional round of the 2023 NCAA Baseball Championship.

The Commodores and Musketeers endured a 3:59 lightning delay heading into the ninth inning with Xavier in front by a run. The Dores were set down in order in the top of the ninth once play resumed.

Sam Hliboki turned in an impressive start for the Commodores, going 5.1 innings with just one run allowed on four hits.

The Dores got on the board in the top of the third with a run on two hits. Jonathan Vastine led off the frame with a double and scored on a single through the left side by Davis Diaz to give Vandy a 1-0 lead.

Xavier pulled even at 1-1 on a sac fly in the bottom of the sixth.

The Musketeers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and pushed across the go-ahead run on a hit-by-pitch.

Vanderbilt, the 2023 SEC Tournament champion, ends the campaign with a 42-20 record.
