OXFORD, Miss. – Lauren Mira and Marie Casares each won their matches against the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels as the Vanderbilt Commodores dropped their match 5-2 on Friday in Starkeville, Miss.
Freshmen Ashleigh Antal and Casares started the Commodores off with a doubles win, defeating Gabby Rangel and Erin Stephens 8-6 on court two, but Ole Miss won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Rebs extended their lead as Megan Gornet fell to Vivian Vlaar and Nelly Radeva dropped her match to Abby Guthrie in three sets.
Lauren Mira put the Commodores on the board, defeating #78 Caroline Rohde-Moe 6-2, 6-3, but #12 Kristi Boxx defeated #34 Jackie Wu in a close 7-5, 6-4 match on court one to clinch the match for the Rebels.
Both Antal and Casares dropped their first sets to their opponents and battled back to win their second sets. Antal fell to Julia Jones in the third, while #106 Casares topped Stephens 6-2 in the third set to make it 5-2 Vanderbilt.
The Commodores fall to 13-8 (5-4 SEC) while the Rebels improve to 14-7 (6-3 SEC). Vanderbilt travels to Mississippi State to take on the Bulldogs on Sunday at 1 p.m.
