Former Vanderbilt star David Price finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting Thursday with Seattle’s Felix Hernandez earning the award.
Price finished his second full season with the Rays going 19-6 with a 2.72 ERA in 32 games, 31 starts, striking out 188 batters in 208.2 innings. The lefty helped lead Tampa Bay to its second American League East championship before losing in five games to eventual AL champ Texas. Price’s 30 quality starts were the most by an AL pitcher since Bret Saberhagen recorded 30 in 1989 en route to his second Cy Young Award for Kansas City.
Price won the Players Choice Award for Outstanding AL Pitcher in October. The award is voted on by major league baseball players and is sponsored by The Major League Baseball Players Association, which honors an outstanding player, pitcher, rookie and comeback player in each league.
While at Vanderbilt, Price compiled one of the most impressive careers in college baseball history. In his final year as a Commodore, Vanderbilt won the Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament championships with Price being named the consensus National Player of the Year and first team All-American. He was later selected first overall by Tampa Bay in major league baseball’s amateur draft. Price holds the Vanderbilt school record with 441 strikeouts in his career and the top two single season marks with his 2006 (155 strikeouts) and 2007 (194) campaigns.
