With the win, the Commodores move to 15-8 overall, and 4-5 in SEC play. Ole Miss goes to 13-10 overall, 4-5 in the SEC.
The Commodores also move to 10-4 this season in Memorial Gym.
Vanderbilt now holds a 70-39 series lead over Ole Miss. The Commodores have captured the last four games played in Memorial Gym between the schools, and have won seven of the last eight meetings overall in the series.
Commodore Starters
– The Vanderbilt starters were junior Jermaine Beal, sophomore A.J. Ogilvy, freshman Steve Tchiengang, and freshmen Jeffery Taylor and Brad Tinsley. It is the 58th career start for Beal (and 53rd straight). Both totals are team highs.
– The Commodores are now 5-2 with this starting lineup. They have used three different starting lineups games the last three games. It is the first time since the January 25th contest against Florida with this lineup.
First Half Notes – Vanderbilt 31 Ole Miss 19
– Vanderbilt scored the first 10 points of the game to take a 10-0 lead. Brad Tinsley’s3-pointer at the 19:28 mark extended Vanderbilt’s streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 721. The streak dates back to when the three-point line was established in the 1986-87 season. The Commodores ranks second in Division I basketball only to UNLV’s 728-game streak in Division I basketball. Vanderbilt, UNLV and Princeton (614) are the only three schools in college basketball to accomplish this feat.
– Ole Miss did not score its first points until the 15:38 mark on Terrico White’s dunk.
– George Drake, who missed VU’s game against Alabama on Thursday due to injury, returned to action as a substitute at the 13:46 mark. Prior to the injury, he had started in the Commodores’ last four games. He suffered a hip pointer in practice Wednesday.
– Brad Tinsley’s three pointer at the 7:23 mark gave the Commodores a 24-10 lead. He scored 10 of the team’s first 24 points, marking the fourth straight game in which he has scored in double figures.
– Vanderbilt went on a 13-2 run from the 13:01 mark to the 6:10 mark, capped by Jeffery Taylor’s second fast break dunk in that span to give the team a 29-10 lead, its largest of the game.
– Ole Miss went nearly three minutes without scoring a point from the 8:58 mark to the 5:56 point when Terrico White ended the drought with a jumper.
– The Rebels went on a 9-2 run to end the half.
– The Commodores led 31-19 at the half. The 12-point advantage was the largest this season in SEC play.
– The 19 points Ole Miss scored was the third lowest point total by an opponent this season. Georgia scored 18 on January 14th and Middle Tennessee scored 17 on November 24th.
– Vanderbilt converted on 44.4% of its field goal attempts (12 of 27) in the opening half while Ole Miss was 24.2% (8 of 33). The Commodores held the Rebels David Huertas scoreless in the first half, on 0-for-7 shooting and 0-for-5 from three. Brad Tinsley was VU’s leading scorer with 10 points, followed by Jeffery Taylor’s eight. A.J. Ogilvy was the top rebounder with seven.
Second Half Notes
– Ole Miss cut the Vanderbilt 12-point deficit to just seven (37-32) at the 15:58 mark. It was the closest they had been since trailing by six (14-8) at the 13:01 mark in the first half.
– Lance Goulbourne’s three pointer at the 12:36 mark pushed the VU lead back up to double digits at 49-39. It was his first shot of the game.
– A.J. Ogilvy’s jumper at the 11:43 mark pushed the lead up to 12 at 51-39. He added a fast break layup at the 11:16 mark to make it a 53-39 advantage. The bucket put him at 11 points, marking the third straight game in double-digits.
– George Drake’s first points of the game on a jumper at the 9:12 mark extended the lead to 58-42.
– Goulbourne added a jumper at the 8:15 mark to extend the lead to 60-42. His dunk at the 7:45 mark put the Commodores up 62-43, matching the largest lead of the game.
– The closest Ole Miss would get would be 10 points on Huertas three pointer with 22 seconds left in the game to make it 71-61.
– Lance Goulbourne scored all 11 of his points in the game in the second half on 4-of-4 shooting.
– After scoring just three points on 1-of-5 shooting in the first stanza, A.J. Ogilvy went 6-for-7 in the second half, scoring 14 points.
Postgame Notes – Vanderbilt 71 Ole Miss 61
– VU is now 14-0 on the season when leading at halftime.
– The Commodores have now won three straight games in conference and are 2-2 in league games at Memorial Gym.
– The Commodores shot 66.7% from the field after intermission (16 of 24), while the Rebels improved on their first half shooting, going 16-of-34 (47.1%).
– Vanderbilt had four players score in double figures, led by A.J. Ogilvy’s 17 point, nine rebound afternoon.
– For the game, the Commodores shot 54.9% from the field (28-of-51), including 7-of-14 (50%) from three-point range. It was the first time they have shot over 50% at home since shooting 56% against Saint Francis on Dec. 31.
– Vanderbilt outrebounded Ole Miss 37-34, including 33 defensive rebounds, a high in SEC play this year. It is third most defensive rebounds overall behind 35 they recorded against UMass (1/3) and 34 against Tennessee Tech (12/20).
Individual Notes
– Lance Goulbourne’s 11 points was his most since scoring 10 in back-to-back- games against Saint Francis (Dec. 31) and UMass (Jan. 3).
– A.J. Ogilvy was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds.
– Brad Tinsley added 12 points with five assists and five rebounds. The rebound total was the second best of his career, behind the six he had against Illinois-Chicago on Dec. 3.
– Jermaine Beal finished with eight points, snapping his streak of double-digit outputs at four games.
