Pitchers’ Duel Goes to Alabama

Dores fall 2-1 to Crimson Tide

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Vanderbilt dropped the series at Alabama with a 2-1 loss Saturday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

The Commodores scored first once again Saturday. Jonathan Vastine singled and advanced to second on a groundout to bring Davis Diaz to the plate. Diaz then doubled down the third base line to score Vastine and put Vandy up 1-0.

Alabama pulled even on a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth by Drew Williamson.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth when Alabama’s Mac Guscette hit the Crimson Tide’s second solo homer to give Alabama a 2-1 lead.

The Commodores loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth but were unable to scratch across the game-tying run.

Devin Futrell was impressive over seven innings of work. The lefty held Alabama to one run on four hits and walked just one.

Vanderbilt (34-13, 17-7 SEC) head north up I-65 for a Tuesday night matchup at Louisville on ESPNU. First pitch against the Cardinals is set for 5 p.m. CT.
