NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 2 Vanderbilt finished off a three-game sweep of Monmouth Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field with a 13-1 victory.
After allowing an unearned run in the first inning Commodores’ (7-1) starter Philip Pfeifer (2-0) settled in and cruised through the next five innings to earn his second win of the week. The lefty allowed a one-out single in the second then sat down eight straight Hawks and did not allow any hits over his final four frames. A leadoff walk in the fifth looked to be potential trouble for the sophomore but he responded by making an athletic play on an attempted sacrifice bunt then struck out the next two batters to end the inning. For the week, Pfeifer went 2-0 in his two starts allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with 16 strikeouts.
The Vanderbilt offense took care of business for the third straight day to give the Dores their first series sweep of the season. VU scored in six of the eight innings with eight different players recording at least one hit. The Dores moved into the lead in the third inning scoring a run without the benefit of a hit. Tony Kemp walked to lead off the inning, stole second base and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch with the first of his four runs scored in the game. Vandy stretched the lead late in the game scoring eight runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Freshman Kyle Smith delivered a RBI-double in the seventh and added a three-run triple off the left field wall in the eighth to finish the day 2-for-2 with four RBI. Smith’s first three hits of his career have knocked in five runs.
Monmouth starter Jonathan Shippee (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks giving up two runs in 2.2 innings. Kyle Perry paced the offense going 1-for-4 with a run scored.
The Commodores finished the weekend outscoring Monmouth (1-3) 29-3, out hitting Monmouth 30-11 and stealing 16 bases. Jack Lupo led the way with six steals in the series while going 6-for-11 (.545) after a 1-for-3 outing on Sunday. Vanderbilt’s pitching staff dominated all weekend allowing only three runs, two earned, while striking out 35 batters in 27 innings.
Vanderbilt returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Hawkins Field when Arkansas State rolls into Nashville. First pitch against the Red Wolves is slated for 4 p.m. VU hosts Evansville on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before welcoming Illinois-Chicago to town for a three-game series next weekend.
