NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Senior Christina Rosca and sophomore Georgia Drummy advanced to the singles Round of 32 and doubles Round of 16 after an undefeated start at the Oracle ITA Fall Nationals on Thursday.
“Great first day here in Newport. Christina played a very clean and smart match this morning with Nayar,” Vanderbilt head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said.
Rosca commanded a strong start for the pair by securing her spot in the singles Round of 32 with a straight set victory over Colorado’s Sara Nayar, 6-1, 6-3.
Joining Rosca in the Round of 32, Drummy bested Southern California’s Salma Ewing.
Drummy bounced back from a 6-4 defeat in the first set to take down Ewing, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the final two sets to advance to the next round.
“Georgia had chances in the first set serving at 4-3 and Ewing played very well to win the set 6-4,” Tsoubanos said. “Georgia regrouped nicely and made some adjustments to her tactics in the second set and played much more disciplined tennis in the third set. I was happy to see her finish the match the way she did by playing low error but aggressive tennis.”
In doubles play, Rosca and Drummy fell short in the first set to Central Florida pair Kuznetsova and Zeleva, 6-4. Looking to make a comeback in the second set, Rosca and Drummy bounced back from a 2-5 deficit to force a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, the duo marked their spot in the Round of 32 with a 1-0 (3) victory.
“In doubles, there were some pretty big momentum changes. We started out 0-2 then took four straight games to go up 4-2. From that point on UCF took control of the match and went on an eight-game run playing very good, smart doubles,” Tsoubanos said. “Chris and Georgia kept competing and made a major tactical change and climbed back into the match. I’m proud of the way they hung around and found a way and glad they were able to advance to the next round and get another opportunity (Friday).”
Rosca and Drummy will be back in action Friday on day two of the Oracle ITA Nationals with the singles Round of 32.
