Junior Valeria Ray, senior Bridget Stammel inch closer to securing qualification into NCAA Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. — Junior Valeria Ray and senior Bridget Stammel moved one step closer to securing additional NCAA qualifying spots for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team with wins on Friday at the ITA Sectional Championships hosted by LSU.

No. 45 Ray again got the momentum started for the Dores with a morning singles win, downing Florida’s Nikola Daubnerova 7-6 (4), 6-3. The win moves her to 5-1 in her last six matches. Following singles, the No. 37 ranked pair of Ray and Stammel faced Amina Salibayeva and Addison Bowman of Alabama. The Dore duo cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory to claim their spot in the doubles semifinals.

Ray is now one win away from becoming a qualifier for the NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles. Saturday will begin with Ray up against Ole Miss’ No. 67 Emily Welker at 11 a.m. followed by Ray and Stammel versus No. 45 Xinyi Nong and Daubnerova at 1 p.m. The Sectional draw and results are available on the ITA tournament page.
