Offense Stays Hot

Commodores put up 16 runs in seven-inning win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt scored double-digit runs for the fourth consecutive game Tuesday night, defeating Tennessee Tech 16-3 in seven innings at Hawkins Field.

Every Vanderbilt starter reached base at least once and nine different players tallied at least one RBI. The Dores worked 13 walks to go with nine hits.

Colin Barczi posted a team-high three RBI followed by RJ Austin, David Mendez, Riley Nelson and Brodie Johnston with two RBI each. Austin and Mike Mancini led the team with three runs scored apiece.

Tennessee Tech scored a pair of runs on a two-out double in the top of the first but Vanderbilt would push 16 unanswered runs across, scoring in each of the first five innings.

Barczi got the scoring going with a bases-loaded, three-run double that scored Austin, Johnston and Mac Rose. After a walk to Mancini, Jacob Humphrey doubled down the line in left to give Vandy a 4-2 lead as Barczi touched home.

Austin worked a walk in the second and stole second before taking third on a groundout. He then came home on an error to make it 5-2.

Five straight walks with one out in the bottom of the third led to a five-run frame on two hits. Austin and Rustan Rigdon each picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Riley Nelson singled to score Jonathan Vastine and Austin.

Johnston then hit a double down the third base line to score two more runs as Vandy went on top 10-2.

After Humphrey was hit by a pitch, Vastine hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to score Mancini who started the inning with a leadoff single. With Humphrey on third and Vastine on second after a wild pitch, Austin singled home Humphrey for his second RBI on the night.

A pair of sac flies by Nelson and Rose brought home two more runs and made it 14-2, Commodores, after four innings.

Mendez entered the game as a pinch hitter in the fifth and recorded his first hit and first RBI as a Commodore on a two-run single up the middle.

The Golden Eagles would add a run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch but Vandy would go on to win 16-3 in run-rule fashion.

Brennan Seiber picked up the win with 1.2 innings of work. Connor Fennell, Luke Guth and Tommy O’Rourke would combine with Seiber to not allow a Tennessee Tech hit over the final 4.2 innings.

Including the last inning of Vanderbilt 10-0 win over Saint Mary’s on Sunday, the Commodore offense has scored 23 runs over the last seven innings.

Vanderbilt finishes its six-game homestand a perfect 6-0 and travels to Los Angeles this weekend to compete against UCLA, USC and UConn in the Southern California College Baseball Classic.
