No. 8 VU Tames Tigers 3/27/2005 The No. 8 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team improved to 5-1 in SEC play as it edged the LSU Tigers, 4-3, at the Currey Tennis Center on Easter Sunday. Head Coach Geoff Macdonald’s club began the day taking two of three doubles matches from the Tigers. The Tigers clawed their way to a victory at the No. 2 slot, where the LSU tandem of Staten Spencer and Marina Chiarelli downed the No. 41 Vanderbilt duo of Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish, 8-2. The Commodores quickly countered the Tiger win with a victory of their own at the first position. VU senior Audra Falk and freshman Amanda Taylor tripped the Tiger pairing of Amanda Mang and Tiffany Tucker, 8-5. The decisive doubles point came down the match on Court Two. The showdown pitted Commodore senior Annie Menees and freshman Caroline Farrell against LSU’s Camila Caliari and Daysi Espinal. The Tigers took a 4-5 lead, but the Dores broke back to earn a 6-5 advantage. The Commodores went on to take the next two games and clinch the doubles point, 8-5. VU’s Taylor registered the second Commodore point of the day at the No. 4 slot. The Richland, Wash. native bounced LSU’s Tucker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Vanderbilt’s No. 8 Falk chalked up the third VU point of the day with her straight set triumph over No. 99 Amanda Mang, 6-0, 6-4. Falk moves her 2005 record to 15-3. The Commodores clinched their fifth SEC win on the strength of Fish’s “W” at No. 2. Fish dropped LSU’s Spencer, 6-1, 6-4 and matches Falk with a stellar 15-3 mark in the 2005 campaign. The Tigers nabbed the remaining three matches at Nos. 3, 5 and 6. Marina Chiarelli, Camila Caliari, and Daysi Espinal all gathered wins for the Tigers. With the win, the Dores move to 15-3, 5-1 SEC, while LSU falls to 7-7, 1-5 SEC. Vanderbilt resumes play on the road next weekend as they face Alabama on Friday and Auburn on Sunday. Doubles |
