No. 5 Women’s Tennis Heads to Non-Conference Powers 3/17/2005 The No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team travels to the Lone Star State this weekend to face off against No. 17 Baylor and No. 13 Texas. The Dores greet the Baylor Bears on Saturday clutching an overall record of 12-2 along with a 3-1 mark in SEC play. Currently, the No. 17 Bears own an 11-2 overall record with wins over both Clemson and Pepperdine. Following the Dores clash with the Bears, Coach Geoff Macdonald’s club caps the weekend with a trip to Austin for a showdown with the No. 13 Longhorns. The Longhorns have dropped their last two outings at UCLA and Southern Cal and currently hold an 8-4 record, while going 4-0 in Big 12 action. “These matches will truly be two great road tests against tough Big 12 teams,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. The Commodores make their way to Big 12 country coming off a weekend in which they split SEC matches. Last Friday, the Commodores captured its most impressive win of the season against SEC rival and No. 2 Florida. The Dores dropped a tight doubles point, but countered to take four singles matches to bounce the Gators in Nashville, 4-2. Thus far in 2005, the Commodores are a perfect 9-0 against non-conference competition. Seven of those nine Commodore foes owned a top 65 ranking at the time of the contest, with four ranked in the top 25. “We like to play a really, really tough schedule,” said Macdonald. “It just doesn’t do us any good to play easy matches.” The Commodores hit the courts of the Baylor Tennis Center on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and return to action on Sunday at Texas. The match with the Longhorns is slated for 12:15 p.m. |
