STARKVILLE, Miss. — The No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores improved to 6-2 in league play Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over the No. 28 Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Commodores kicked off the match securing the doubles point for the third match in a row with wins on courts one and three. In singles, VU sealed the victory, taking courts one, three and five.
The Commodores were tested throughout singles, as both teams brought a trio of ranked players to the match. Redshirt-junior Georgina Sellyn clinched the Commodore victory on court five.
In tandems, Fernanda Contreras and Sellyn picked up the first victory of the day with a 6-3 win over No. 61 Patrasc/Rentouli on court three. Both courts one and two were on match point, but No. 33 Astra Sharma and Courtney Colton sealed the deal, 6-4, as Dores on court two dropped match point three times in a row.
In singles, No. 25 Campbell earned a quality ranked win on court one, as the junior defeated No. 13 Jasmine Lee in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The Commodores’ lone loss of the day came on court four with Colton falling to No. 100 Rentouli, 6-2, 6-4.
On court three, No. 21 Sharma brought in the third point for VU, taking down Harrison, 6-4, 6-3. Sellyn followed up with the final victory in a three set thriller, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(1).
NOTES:
-Sellyn/Contreras doubles win on court three was the pair’s first ever-ranked win.
– Sharma remains undefeated when playing on on court three
-Overall, the Commodores have only lost once this season at No. 3 singles
– Campbell earned her 20th victory this season, as well as her highest ranked win
– Frances Altick remains undefeated this season, 12-0 (7-0), and 99-31 overall
