NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 5 Vanderbilt women’s team improved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in Southeastern Conference play Friday night in a 6-1 victory over the No. 49 Missouri Tigers.
The Commodores began the SEC showdown taking the tandems point with wins on courts two and three. At No. 3 doubles, Fernanda Contreras and Christina Rosca flew through their match against Mackenzy Middlebrook and Kadi Fauble, only allowing the Tiger pair one game.
The Dores came through with the clinch as Emma Kurtz and Sydney Campbell earned their fourth (4-1) Southeastern Conference win on court two. The duo downed Cassidy Spearman and Tate Schroeder, 6-3.
Vandy opened up singles play sweeping first sets, with three Commodores only allowing their opponents two or less games.
Contreras extended the Commodore lead to 2-0, defeating Amina Ismail in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. No. 93 Rosca give VU the 3-0 advantage as the freshman earned her first career victory at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-2 over Spearman. In at the sixth position, Emily Smith clinched the victory for the black and gold over Clare Raley, 6-1, 6-4.
Following the clinch, redshirt-senior Georgina Sellyn took her fifth win at No. 4 singles. The Glasgow, Scotland native pulled off a hard fought 6-4 first set and completed the victory in straight-sets, 6-2.
The Tigers took their lone point on the day in a third-set tiebreaker on court five against Kurtz. The freshman earned a dominant first set advantage, 6-2, however her opponent, Schroder, rallied to take the second set, 6-4 and third set ten-point tiebreaker.
No. 5 Sharma garnered the Dores their final victory in a battle on court one. The Aussie escaped her first set against Bea Santos, 7-5, and dug deep throughout her second set for the victory, 6-4.
Vanderbilt hosts its sixth top-25 opponent on Sunday at 1 p.m., as the No. 18 Arkansas Razorbacks travel to West End.
