No. 4 VU Women’s Tennis Travels To Atlanta, Baton Rouge 3/18/2004 Commodores will take on No. 39 Georgia Tech, No. 35 LSU this weekend ATLANTA — The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team takes to the road this weekend for a pair of matches against No. 39 Georgia Tech and No. 35 Louisiana State. The Commodores head to Atlanta, Ga., on Friday, March 19, for a 1 p.m. CT match and then continue on to Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday, March 21, for another 1 p.m. contest. Vanderbilt (13-2, 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference) will face its final non-conference opponent of the 2004 regular season Friday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta. The Commodores are coming off a 5-2 victory over intrastate rival MTSU on Monday, in a match where Vanderbilt rallied to victory after dropping the doubles point for only the third time this season. The Yellow Jackets (8-4) defeated then-No. 39 Ohio State last weekend in convincing fashion, 7-0. Georgia Tech is led by 62nd-ranked Lyndsay Shosho, who has compiled a 7-5 record at first singles this year. Vanderbilt took a 6-1 victory from Georgia Tech a year ago in Nashville. The Jackets were a part of the 2003 June Stewart Fall Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt in October. During that tournament, VU players posted a 6-1 head-to-head record over GT in singles play. The Lady Tigers (8-5, 0-4 in the SEC) have won 10 consecutive home matches coming into Friday’s meeting with Kentucky. LSU began conference play by dropping four tough road matches, but returned home last weekend to defeat No. 16 Texas A&M, 4-3. Vanderbilt will be looking to match its performance from a year ago, when the Commodores shutout LSU, 7-0. Lady Tiger Jessica Ferguson is the SEC’s reigning Player of the Week. The Commodores return home next weekend and play host to Alabama and Auburn. Vanderbilt has played its first five conference matches on the road, and will finish the conference season with five home matches leading up to the SEC Tournament, April 15-18, at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center. |
